  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cocoa powder
  • 1½ cups vegetable oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk (room temperature)
  • 2 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon purple food coloring
  • 1 pound cream cheese (softened)
  • 2 sticks unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 4 cups confectioners' sugar (sifted)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare two 9-inch cake pans by greasing and flouring them.
  2. Sift together flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder in a mixing bowl until well combined.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together vegetable oil, buttermilk, eggs, red food coloring, white vinegar, vanilla extract, and purple food coloring until smooth.
  4. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans.
  5. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cool in pans for about 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks.
  6. For frosting, beat cream cheese and unsalted butter together until smooth; gradually add confectioners' sugar until fluffy.
  7. Once cakes are cooled completely, frost between layers and on top of the cake.
