Ingredients

  • 4 cups water
  • 2 tbsp Kashmiri green tea (or other green tea)
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 12 star anise
  • 2 crushed cardamom pods
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • Sugar or honey to taste
  • Crushed nuts for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Boil the water in a saucepan and add green tea; boil for about 5 minutes.
  2. Stir in baking soda until the water turns deep red; boil for another 2 minutes.
  3. Add star anise, crushed cardamom, and cinnamon; boil for an additional minute.
  4. Reduce heat and simmer for 20-30 minutes until reduced by half.
  5. Add salt and stir well.
  6. Pour in whole milk and bring to a boil while stirring continuously.
  7. Once pink color develops, remove from heat and strain into cups.
  8. Sweeten to taste with sugar or honey and garnish with crushed nuts if desired.
