Description

Experience the vibrant flavors of takeout with this Easy Chinese Pepper Steak Recipe. This quick and delicious dish features tender beef strips sautéed with colorful bell peppers and coated in a savory sauce that’s ready in under 30 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb beef sirloin or flank steak, thinly sliced
  • 5 tbsp soy sauce (divided)
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch (divided)
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • ½ cup water or beef broth
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil (divided)
  • Bell peppers (red and green), sliced
  • 1 yellow onion, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp grated ginger (optional)

Instructions

  1. Marinate the beef: Combine sliced beef with 2 tbsp soy sauce, 1 tbsp cornstarch, rice vinegar, and sesame oil. Let it marinate for at least 15 minutes.
  2. Prepare the sauce: Mix remaining soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, sugar, cornstarch, and water/broth in a bowl until smooth.
  3. Brown the beef: Heat 1 tbsp vegetable oil in a skillet over high heat. Cook marinated beef for about 2–3 minutes per side until browned. Remove from skillet.
  4. Stir-fry vegetables: In the same skillet, add another tablespoon of oil and stir-fry bell peppers and onion for about 3–4 minutes until tender-crisp. Add minced garlic and optional ginger; cook for an additional 30 seconds.
  5. Combine: Return beef to the skillet with vegetables and pour in the prepared sauce. Stir well and cook until the sauce thickens slightly (about 2–3 minutes).
  6. Serve: Garnish with chopped green onions and serve hot over steamed rice or noodles.
